BIRJAND

 

Birjand is a town Located in the southern part of Khorasan province in eastern Iran. This town has a civilization dating back to more than 2000 years. At an elevation of 1,480 meters, Birjand is surrounded by many mountain ranges. Minabad, the highest mountain peak in Birjand, has an elevation of 2,900 meters. Birjand has an arid, desert climate and an average annual rainfall of 167 mm. Towering pines decorate the town in profuse numbers, their long underground roots making them resistant against the shortage of water. BIRJAND has a population of nearly 120,000 estimated to own approximately 18,000 carpet looms.

 

BIRJAND carpet is the finest quality of Persian carpet in the east of IRAN. BIRJAND rugs have many similar indications like QOM, but the borders of the BIRJAND rugs or carpet have more detail and are more crowded. They are mainly made in light red and powerful blue with ivory as a contrasting colour. Their foundation consist of Warps mostly made out of cotton, and wefts made mostly of wool. Weavers in BIRJAND are using Persian knots with their number increasing with the quality of carpet but the average is around 120 KPSI (30 RAJ) up to 475 KPSI (60 RAJ).
