KASHMAR

 

Kashmar is a small town south of Mashed in the province of Khorasan, Iran. In the eighteenth and early ninetieth century it produced some very handsome and densely knotted rugs. This exceptional composition from Kashmar has borrowed design features from different weaving areas. There are some panels with tree motifs on a ground and between them a panel with a dome and some minarets set under a column arch, the floral repetition on a beige ground in the main border. The carpets that are made there usually have a curvature in their patterns and. has the highest quality of PERSIAN rugs and carpet of the East of Iran. KASHMAR rugs and carpets are well known for their pattern and smooth structure. a common design for Kashmars also, is called in Farsi "ZIR KHAKI" Which translate exactly to "under earth" and is referred to designs that depict archaeological artefacts found in Iran such as vases and other ornaments with designs of birds, etc.

 

Other common patterns are usually pictorials that tell the story of a significant occurrence or entity in Persian history. These could be the pictures of an ancient and respected Persian king, or just an attempt to show the Persian love for beauty and intricate craftsmanship. The KASHMAR carpets are extremely durable and will last a very long time increasing their elegance with age.

 

The colours of these carpets are light blue and cream as a base contrasting with ivory, soft green, red and brown. The foundation is made mostly in cotton Wraps with Wefts either in cotton or wool. Weavers in KASHMAR are using Persian knots, so you should check the back of a carpet. The number of Knots varies and depends on the quality of the carpet but the average is around 120 KPSI (30 RAJ) up to 842 KPSI (80 RAJ).
