KERMAN
The city of KERMAN is in southeastern IRAN, and has always been one the carpet weaving centres. The city of KERMAN is the centre of Kerman province located 1022 KM southeast of TEHRAN. The whole population of KERMAN is around 2 million (KERMAN city 340,000). KERMAN has a hot and dry weather in summer and cold and dry in winter. KERMAN is an ancient city and was called Botia during the Achaemenids dynasty. Kerman is a centre of trade in the region and is accessible by the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea ports through railway and highways.
The carpets from KERMAN have been appreciated from western collectors for many years ago. KERMAN carpets are famous to have a single Medallion with arabesque form named ESKI-KERMAN. However there are many different designs in KERMAN carpets and rugs. Another famous design is "Tree of Life" that is very common. KERMAN carpets and rugs have very high quality similar to TABRIZ and ISFAHAN. They are highly prized because of the quality of their design and colours. They are made of fine, lustrous wool, in soft red, green, blue, yellow and ivory. Generally they have very light colour and the red and blue colours in KERMAN rugs and carpets have lighter shades in comparison to the carpets and rugs made in other cities in IRAN. They are produced in large sizes (10 x 18 feet) as well as smaller sizes. The Wraps are made of cotton and Piles from wool, the knot type is Persian, and the number of Knots varies and depends on the quality of carpet but the average is around 120KPSI (30 RAJ) and could go up to 842 KPSI (80 RAJ).
