PERSIAN CARPETS

The history of Persian carpets extends for more than 2,500 years. To track the history of Persian carpets is to follow a path of cultural growth in one of the finest civilizations the world has ever known.

All hand weavings in general and carpet weaving in particular are considered as a communicating element among different civilizations and cultures, and brings these civilizations closer to each other and pulls them together. Hand woven carpets were not considered as a work of art only, but also as a functional object respected by all nations. They have magical aspects recognized by many cultures, for their immortality. That's why the gardens of Eden (paradise) have been reflected in many human hand weavings across a wide divide of time and culture. Similar, magnificent and breath-taking gardens, exist in knotted carpets woven by nomads in the west of Iran, as well as in Climes made by American "Navaho" Indians.

This original art, the pride of The East, reached Europe around the time of Marco Polo. Since then its grandeur has penetrated the soul of western culture, yet no one in the west has been able to adapt it because it cannot be imitated. How can we fail to surrender to such splendour! Such precision in the "handmade" woven tapestries, reminds us perfectly of the intense and laborious work of these artisans, nomadic or village people, expressing their cultural and religious past.
